OVERVIEW
Giorgia Lupi is an information designer and Partner at Pentagram whose work aims to bridge the divide between data and the humanity they represent, taking the abstract and making it felt. Her approach, “data humanism,” recognizes that data isn’t perfect — it’s collected by and for imperfect people. In the flaws of data lies the context and humanity that turns data into a tool that connects, exposes, and resonates.
WORLDBUILDING
My goal with the video was to spark excitement about data. I used Lupi’s TED talk as scaffolding to build a stylized world that aims to intuitively tell a story about data humanism. Read the full process writeup on Medium, here.
The booklet is an opportunity to dive deep into Lupi's life, work, philosophy, and legacy. I used organic shapes to symbolize the messiness of real-life as it permeates data and corporate structures, symbolized by rigid polygons. I selected PP Editorial and PP Nikkei Maru for an edgier take on Lupi’s usual airy style. Read the full process writeup on Medium, here.
DATA VISUALIZATION
I wanted to investigate Lupi's impact, both numerically and qualitatively, landing on colorful squares to depict individual pieces. Behind the data lies the tenants of her data humanism manifesto. Read the full process writeup of my original poster on Medium, here.
Of all of the artifacts, I struggled the most with the poster. I think the visualization ended up being difficult to parse for most viewers, which I think lies in (1) my early-stage commitment to a square-based visualization that overlaps itself and (2) my brand system consisting of only one non-neutral color, red. If I could take the time to redo the poster, my first step would be to incorporate texture and pattern so that solid-color fills aren't the only differentiating factor.
